CAMP HILL -- Steel High won a hard fought, dog fight road game at COBO Field on Thursday night, finishing the game 35-28 in overtime.
In the first half of play, Trinity had some noticeable changes from their week 8 game against Camp Hill. Against the Lions, Shamrock QB Caleb Wray had a prominent offensive presence, but against the Rollers, Wray was sidelined in the first half, but not for another quarterback, but direct snaps, mainly to Freshman running back Messiah Meckins, and WR Max Schaleger.
Steel High, on the other side, has D-1 prospect Alex Erby, a top quarterback in the Mid-Penn, but his abilities were slim in the first half, completing 0 passes, attempting 4. The Rollers made up for rushing with Ronald Burnette, who ended up taking 3 to the house. Burnette spoke postgame about his performance, “My team was my motivation today, they help me do everything I do” … “I couldn’t have run for over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns tonight without my line.”
At halftime, Steel High led 14-7, and knew they needed to at least keep up the momentum in order to stay ahead in the game. Head Coach Andrew Erby spoke postgame on his halftime message, “We knew we’ll keep doing our thing, keep looking at what’s open… we just wanted to remain focused and go back to our gameplan.”
As for star QB Alex Erby, he felt the same way, saying “the difference maker (in the second half) was just catching the ball, and limiting penalties.”
Trinity carried into some really solid play after halftime, as Caleb Wray entered the game for the Rocks, and he immediately got to work, completing a long pass to Messiah Meckins to get to Steel-High’s 45, but from there, Trinity went 4th and out on Wray’s first drive. To respond, Steel-High showed no mercy to the Steelton native in Wray, and rushed into the house, with Ronald Burnette carrying the ball. As Trinity responded with a following touchdown, Burnette did too, with his hat trick of scores on the night.
Caleb Wray told his teammates on the sideline that the 4th quarter was “ours”, and they did tie the ballgame at 28, thanks to Christian Joy, who took a 50+ yard touchdown into the house, and tied the game with 4:24 left, which is where the score remained until Jaeion Perry took in the final touchdown for Steel High in OT, followed by 4 straight defensive stops to close out a hard fought, much anticipated Mid Penn Capital match-up on Thursday night.
In week 10, Steel-High hosts West Perry while Trinity visits Halifax.
