Kevin Rutherford has had plenty of experiences around Mid Penn basketball, and his newest addition is joining Tigh Savercool's staff as an assistant, starting this season.
Rutherford served the interim head coach for Mechanicsburg's team last season, and after the season, the Wildcats' opened up the job, which was ultimately filled by former McDevitt coach Mike Gaffey. Rutherford went on to join Mark Risser's staff as an assistant at McDevitt's squad across the river, but it wasn't the right fit, and Rutherford moved on to what he calls a "seamless fit" at Cedar Cliff.
The history with Rutherford and Colts' head coach Tigh Savercool goes back a way. Rutherford, before Mechanicsburg was even a thought, was the head skipper at Camp Hill, and in his first ever season, the Lions faced Greenwood in the District 3 3rd place game, a team that held none other than Tigh Savercool. Rutherford says that Savercool was supportive through the process at Mechanicsburg when his position was opened, "he was a big supporter through the whole process", Rutherford explained.
Rutherford tells us that he didn't go in for a formal interview, but rather it was a "seamless process" that he ended up at Cedar Cliff.
As the interim head coach last season, certainly Rutherford was looking to carry on traditions and things learned into his new role, and he says he's looking to continue a "family" environment to Cedar Cliff. "I want a culture where the kids can grow not only as (basketball) players but as young men." He claims he believes it's about more than wins and losses.
