Cumberland Valley's Boys Soccer Season Closes in Thrilling Upset to Conestoga Valley

It was a scrappy affair between two sides of a first round District event between Cumberland Valley and Conestoga Valley, and a contest that lasted until close to 9:30 PM, after a 7 PM start time on Tuesday evening. The game finished in an upset, with Conestoga Valley upsetting the highly seeded Eagles, 2-1.

Cumberland Valley entered the game as a heavy favorite over 14 seeded Conestoga Valley, but Conestoga was by no means backing down from the fight. In the first half, if you were counting whistles for fouls and things of that nature, you must have counted towards 15, because both teams were scrappy, physical, and playing an in your face type of game.

For Conestoga Valley, it paid off, because it wore down the Eagles who struggled all game to get anything going offensively, all throughout the first 40 minutes, as well as about 37 minutes of the second half. Then, a miracle for Cumberland Valley struck. With 3:18 left before their season ended, they held it out just a little bit longer, with a miraculous goal off a corner kick.

Like the girls soccer game played prior to the boys, there was more than plenty of chances to score, but this point can be exaggerated for the second game, as the boys came within feet of scoring multiple times, most notably when Jayson McGaffin missed a penalty kick just 7 minutes into the second half.

After the potential season saving goal, the boys played almost another half of soccer, with 2 consecutive non-scoring overtimes, and the game was sent to Penalty Kicks.

Conestoga Valley, as the visitor, led us off, and they scored their first, followed by a no good PK from from Cumberland Valley. It came down to Jayson McGaffin again, who most the prior in-game penalty kick, and he missed another in round 5 of PK’s, to advance Conestoga Valley to the next round of District 3 playoffs.

Cumberland Valley boys soccer finish their season 11-5-2, while Conestoga moves to 8-7-2. Conestoga Valley will face Warwick in the quarterfinals. Warwick, the 4A 11 seed, is also moving on from an upset thriller, after upsetting 6 seed Manheim Township in double overtime, off of a sudden death goal from Drew Bassoff.

The quarterfinal match-up will take place at Warwick this Saturday at a time TBD. Cumberland Valley’s impressive season comes to a close.
